IREA is hard at work discovering and delivering innovative ways to harness it for you.
That energy is
We are IREA
Our Passion:
Make a difference! This motivates our team of experts every day as they work to develop sustainability solutions that will shape our community and beyond. At IREA, we find purpose in contributing to something greater than ourselves. We are excited to be part of an industry that is at the forefront of transitioning the world to renewable energy resources. We know we can’t stand by hoping the world will change. We create the change we want to see.
Finding relevance and significance in every effort and working together for the common goal, that’s how IREA will leave the world better than how we found it.
Our Practice:
Our R&D facility located in Virginia is equipped with a laboratory and research center designed for test and experimentation relevant to the innovation of sustainable practices. We focus our internal research on emerging technology designed to optimize organic waste management, mitigate food and livestock waste impacts, and convert waste to energy. We have a fully collaborative approach with public and private entities, federal agencies, and universities as we work together to offer increasingly efficient and competitive energy solutions.

Our Origin:
IREA is a recently formed, fully staffed division within ITility dedicated to research and development. It is an outgrowth of the RE2AL2 pillar of ITility’s project management lifecycle. In 2017 ITility began seeking solutions to a number of environmental concerns involving organic waste and its impacts on our environment. While methodically developing multiple solution paths it became clear that the team assembled to address this vital need was to become a permanent fixture among ITility’s service offerings. Vital enough to be given their own name, IREA – ITility Research & Engineering Activity.
What is Biogas?
Biogas is an energy-rich, renewable fuel produced by the breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen (anaerobically). Decomposition of organic matter, such as food scraps and animal waste, inside this environment releases a blend of gases, primarily methane and carbon dioxide. This process when controlled and harnessed is known as Anaerobic Digestion (AD). IREA has developed an AD system adaptable in size and type of organics used to feed the process to fit a wide range of uses and locations.

IREA’s patent-pending technology, MADPOWR – Modular Anaerobic Digestion Point of Waste Renewable Energy – is a modular renewable energy system that tackles multiple real world needs head on. Because the system is modular it is scalable to handle any size requirement and can provide various combinations of the following benefits.
Return On Investment
-
Energy Costs:
The AD system produces biogas as a combustible resource which can be adapted to various purposes. -
Usable/Sellable Fertilizer:
Our process removes harmful ingredients such as phosphorous from animal waste reducing impact on sensitive environments like the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. -
Waste Management:
Our customized systems are designed to comply with local regulations in mind to avoid environmental penalties. -
Environment:
AD provides multiple benefits to the environment including lowering carbon footprint, protecting local water purity, and reducing landfill usage.
